I am teaching a course at a local college called, of all things, Digital Literacy! It is a course I proposed several years ago, and what an exciting experience it is turning out to be. I have mostly juniors and seniors and they are a mature, computer savvy bunch. Most are communications majors, one is pre-law, one is computer science (he keeps me on my techie-toes), and several are English majors. What I am discovering, which is no surprise, is that the liberal arts folks, though competent in their computer skills, have not had technology woven into their content area courses throughout their college careers. The folks in communication? that’s a different story. They have had to keep up with the technological tools required for broadcasting and production. The other thing I am finding is the dearth of critical thinking skills relative to research, social media, and the overall impact of technology on culture and society. The semester has just begun and so far we have just discussed traditional literacy and a bit about digital literacy, but stay tuned, lots more to come.
